One of the Worst Cities for Drivers

A study published by WalletHub showed that Jersey City is the 13th worst city in the country for drivers. The study looked at various criteria in four key categories: cost, traffic and road conditions, safety and driver, and car wellness. Jersey City saw the highest auto maintenance costs in the country and the second worst road/traffic conditions in America next to New York City, which was ranked the worst city for drivers overall.

“Driving can be challenging in major metropolitan areas for obvious reasons,” said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill. “In Jersey City, we are constantly improving roadways and providing innovative ways to travel, such as new bike lanes and the anticipated bike-share program (Citi Bike).”

New Path for Bikers and Pedestrians

In 2015, a group of Jersey City residents, under the banner of the Liberty Bridge Organization, proposed a 5,000 foot long pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Hudson River. The plan calls for the new bridge to start at the Jersey City embankment and end in Battery Park City, complete with two levels of pedestrian paths, similar to New York City’s Highline and Brooklyn Bridge, with retail shops lining the bridge.

Since 2005, New York City has doubled the number of bicycling trips while Citibike has expanded to Jersey City. Together with the proposed bridge, these trends would make bicycling an easy means of commuting between these two cities.

Liberty Bridge is another example of an attempt to provide better bicycle and pedestrian connections between existing networks and to accommodate the commuting needs of a growing population in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area.
