Newark Sees Greatest Crime Drop in Fifty Years

Officials in Newark announced major crimes throughout the city experienced the most significant drop in crime in nearly 50 years—due, at least in part to community policing, vigilance and the deployment of dozens of state troopers last January to Newark to combat crime.

During a press conference at City Hall, Mayor Ras Baraka and Safety Director Anthony Ambrose released the most recent crime statistics for Newark—highlighting a 13 percent overall decrease in the number of major crimes throughout the city, including homicides, robbery, aggravated assaults, rapes and grand theft auto.

“Around the state of New Jersey crime numbers have gone up this year,” Baraka said. “We have been able to drive the crime numbers down through Christmas Day, but we are still not out of the woods and still have a lot of work to do,” said Baraka.

The Baraka administration has been under intense community pressure to combat crime—especially during the summer when shootings and robberies spiked across the city and several Newark community activists, including Donna Jackson, slammed Baraka and the Newark City Council for “not doing their jobs.” She said, “In the month of August we had 4 to 10 shootings a day and 14 shootings in a 24-hour period and the mayor and the elected officials haven’t done a damn thing!” Jackson has posted several YouTube videos in the past year, expressing community outrage regarding elected officials’ lethargy in effectively dealing with a multitude of issues in Newark—including charter schools, high unemployment, overdue overtime pay for city workers and of course, crime.
