New Jersey Appoints Five to Cannabis Regulatory Commission

Posted on: April 9, 2021

New Jersey governor Phil Murphy announced Thursday he filled all five appointments to the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission. The group will be responsible for setting rules and regulations for the recreational cannabis market, much like another group that was supposed to be established last year with the same oversight of medical marijuana but was not seated until February 2021. The appointees include a social worker, a former telecom executive, and some experienced policy officials. The committee’s executive director has overseen the state’s medical marijuana program.

Some critics noted that while taking diverse members of the community, the appointees do not any Black men, the group most directly affected by laws criminalizing marijuana – and the group expected to most benefit from the legalization and expungement of arrest records. The NAACP has even threatened to sue the administration over the lack of anyone representing an organization that seeks to undo a variety of social inequities and inequalities, such as poverty, income inequality, historic minority oppression, past and present discrimination. Now selected, the regulatory commission will now meet publicly, starting April 12th. Citizens will be able to attend the virtual sessions and leave public comment. When the cannabis legislation was passed in February, proponents believed New Jerseyans could start buying from licensed vendors by the end of the year.

Despite the state’s orders months ago, there are still thousands of prior convicted individuals waiting for their arrests to be expunged. Other citizens want to bid on Licensing for Alternative Treatment Centers being offered by the state. In either instance, it helps to have an experienced partner by your side.
