What Are the Most Dangerous Toys of 2022?

Posted on: December 8, 2022

While shopping for gifts for the children in your life this holiday season, you may want to consider the safety hazards of some of the year’s most popular toys. According to one expert, an estimated 200,000 children go to emergency rooms across the country every year with toy-related injuries. Half of those kids are under the age of five.

Here are the nominees for the most dangerous toys of 2022 to avoid according to W.A.T.C.H, a non-profit organization committed to educating the public about hazardous kids’ products.

  1. CoComelon JJ’s Musical Learning Smart Watch

Age recommendation: 3+ years

A compartment on the back of this toy watch contains a coin cell battery which poses a risk of internal chemical burns and death if ingested.

  • Disney Raya and the Last Dragon Raya’s Action & Adventure Sword

Age Recommendation: 3+ years

This rigid, plastic sword comes with the risk of blunt force injuries, especially to the eyes and face.

  • Lil Woodzeez Tickle Your Taste Buds Bakery Set

Age Recommendation: 3+ years

This playset comes with miniature versions of cakes, pies, and other treats that may cause choking if ingested.

  • Douglas Plush Zeus Lion

Age Recommendation: 24+ months

This soft and cuddly stuffed lion is prone to shedding. Loose fibers can be dangerous if ingested or aspirated.

  • Munchkin Dingray Musical Bath Toy

Age Recommendation: 12+ months

This bright, floating xylophone comes with a narrow, rigid mallet that can occlude a small child’s airway if mouthed.

  • Ooze Labs Chemistry Station

Age Recommendation: 6+ years

Budding scientists may want to avoid playing with this kit. It contains warnings about assorted chemicals and materials that should not be ingested or come into contact with eyes, mouth, and clothing.

  • Lazada Bunny Rabbit Cuddly Pillow

Age Recommendation: Various

This soft, plush stuffed bunny is marketed as a “hugging pillow” and comes with conflicting age recommendations depending on the retailer. The toy can potentially suffocate an infant if placed over the mouth.

  • Pop’N Fidget Spinners

Age Recommendation: None

These spinners are an example of the many fidget toys available that contain small rubber and metal inserts that pose a choking hazard if removed and ingested.

  • Nerf Pro Gelfire Mythic Blasters

Age Recommendation: 14+ years

Although this Nerf Gel Fire Blaster cautions, “this is not a toy,” it can be found on the retail toy aisle in well-known retail stores. The toy fires hydrated polymer projectiles which can cause eye or facial injuries. (Eyewear projection is included with the product.)

  1. Marvel Studios’ Black Panther Legacy FX Wakanda Battle Claws

Age Recommendation: 5+

These sharp, rigid, plastic claws can cause eye and facial injuries.

How Can I Ensure Toys Are Safe for Children?

Although the toys on this list have not been recalled at this time, they still pose a risk of injury to children. Purchase age-appropriate toys and products for the children in your life. Read the safety warnings on packaging and in product instructions before use. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to check the Consumer Product Safety Commission current recall list for more information on hazardous toys.
