New Jersey Amateur Boxing Champion Killed Crossing Road

Posted on: January 6, 2026

An amateur boxing champion was struck by a vehicle and killed while crossing Route 9 in Old Bridge early Saturday morning. According to Old Bridge Police, Davon Porter, 30, of New Brunswick, was struck by a Honda CR-V near Quality Chevrolet around 1:25 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not identified the driver, and it is unclear whether charges will be filed.

A longtime member of the Gleason’s Gym Jersey Shore, Porter competed in tournaments across the state, becoming a New Jersey Golden Glove champion. In March 2025, Porter was the gym’s first member to participate in the preliminary rounds of the competition.

He was also active in the New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream foundation, a boxing mentorship program, where he coached at-risk youth while also training at an elite level. A union carpenter, Porter, was described as always willing to donate his time and was the biggest supporter of other team members.

Gym members described Porter as a standout who “exemplified everything right in the world… not only to the sport or his vocation, but humanity, in general, and inspired others. He will long be the remembrance of his virtues voluminous.”

A memorial scholarship will be established in Porter’s name to support young people interested in carpentry.

The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to contact Old Bridge police officer Francis Landi at 732-721-5600 ext. 3823 or prosecutor’s office Detective Shadi Zaiton at 732-745-4263.
